My approach to vestibular training has evolved to include “developmental pathways”.
I wanted to create a way to systematically approach vestibular training, with a clear route to progressive overload, as well as built-in deload strategies.
To achieve a holistic approach, I included pathways specific for the three vestibular angular planes
- Yaw (digging corners)
- Pitch (high security)
- Roll (slicing the pie)
I also built out a developmental pathway for “eyes-up”. This allows me to place any movement pattern into a progressively challenging sensorimotor scenario.
The intent is not to get good at the pathway itself, but rather to leverage the pathway to improve key performance capabilities.
For example, if a Team wants to improve their speed and control of movement when clearing a stairwell, they can plug an alternating step-up pattern as the “movement” into the “eyes up” developmental pathway. They can also leverage the pitch developmental pathway to further improve high security movement proficiency.
Ultimately, these pathways allow me to empower Teams to approach vestibular training in a way that prioritizes their specific needs, and push training to the extent that meets their intent.
