Capability Development: speed and accuracy of divided focus eye movements without losing control of your footwork.
Key Goals:
- Quick and accurate eye movements from target to target.
- Maintain speed and precision of footwork.
Loss of speed and precision of movement is common with increased visual demands. As we are loading the demands on your visual system, we are increasing the demands on two other sensory systems that are important for your performance, your vestibular and somatosensory systems.
We can train the speed and accuracy of eye movements moving target to target in isolation, but it important to integrate that skill with a movement pattern. Doing so will strengthen vestibular and somatosensory capabilities which improves control of movement.
Initially, when integrating fast and accurate divided focus eye movements with a footwork pattern, I often see a decrease in speed or a decrease in precision of movement. But with training, that speed and precision of your footwork will remain unchanged even with the increased divided focus visual demands.
This is our goal, particularly in a controlled training environment, because that is as easy as it gets.
This skill will be needed when sleep deprived, dehydrated, physically exhausted, or while wadding through muddy waters at chest height. And it is through building a strong foundation that allows you to continue to perform this capability at a high level no matter the conditions.
