Target Focus and the Vestibular System

In this video Ben is holding the camera while he walks and then transitions to a run. You’ll notice that as he walks we are able to maintain good focus of the gym, but as he transitions to a run we lose that ability to keep clear vision on the environment.

But he didn’t lose visual focus of the gym, just us. Why is that?

We are only getting the visual cues, Ben has his vestibular system sensing the transition to a run and contributing to his situational awareness. Because he has both the visual and vestibular systems working together as he accelerates into a jog, he is able to keep visual clarity. We only have the visual cues as we watch the video, and without the vestibular inputs, we are unable to keep visual focus.

The vestibular system is crucial for the capability of keeping target focus with movement. Particularly with any acceleration movement.

You need to be able to keep target focus with acceleration movements to maintain a high level of situational awareness and performance. So we need to ensure your training incorporates optimizing your vestibular capabilities.
